With all of the different types of campers out there, how do you know what is the best option for you? If you are thinking about getting a truck camper, there are things that you need to educate yourself on first. When you go to the dealership, try to have a general idea of what you are looking for in a camper and what will fit your truck best.

First things first, what type of truck do you have?

Are you using your current truck to haul the camper, or are you planning on buying a new one? This is literally the most important aspect to buying a truck camper… Because if it doesn’t fit right, you aren’t going to get very far. First, figure out what the payload of the pickup truck is. This is the amount of weight that a truck can carry SAFELY!  Including everything that will be packed in your truck, your passengers, and luggage. You need to ensure that this number is safe for you to be on the road with others. Make sure you know the Axle weight as well. The last thing you want is too much weight in the back and to have your axle break while you are on the road!

So how do you decide what the “best” truck camper is?

You have different sizes, styles and floor plans to consider when choosing your camper.  Look at different models such as pop-ups, slide outs, non-slide outs, etc.  ask yourself, what are you using it for? Are you planning to camp a lot, go off roading, or just using it for a place to sleep while traveling? If you need a queen bed for sleeping, more space for the kids, or are more concerned about saving fuel, learn about the different types and what fits you traveling style best.

Hard Side vs Pop-Up Camper

Hard side campers typically have more storage and allow you to feel at home on the road.  You will have good insulation, live in a more spacious area, and you can plan and organize your camper prior to traveling. Pop up campers are light weight, and more affordable. Obviously depending on what you use it for will determine what type of camper you get. You also need to consider what you want it to be equipped with on the interior side of the camper. Depending on the model you may have a bathroom, shower, toilet, or none of the above. If you are planning to travel alone versus bringing along the family and kids, this will be a huge factor in your decision.
